And sure enough, if all of your listeners would buy and read that book, theyre going to get a sense of what their moral imperative is. Anson: We have to do it, yeah, cause, you know, it destroys everything, you know, teams, companies. So youre doing them an extraordinary service.. The professor had some literature that I found so powerful that I now use it with my team. I mean, hes incredibly demanding and yet you can feel his love for you. HR is the most important arm of your company. Melissa: So do you incorporate your core values back into your recruiting process? First of all, what everyone has to embrace is that everyone is different. And then all of these different categories have different values. They do not want to exert. And I know all you chickenshits are afraid to open your mouth, but Im going to need some of you to open your friggin mouths because we cant have a bloody, you know, committee meeting in the middle of a freaking game to solve our damn problem. One thing I loved about what Dean Smith did, though, our legendary former basketball coach who was the coach for Michael Jordan, is when back in the days when people didnt commit early, whenever he took an in house visit he would study how the kid treated his parents. So if a kid comes in and they havent done very well that season, and this is a post season review, they all have a protective narrative thats usually, in my environment, organized and I guess constructed in a loop with their parents. Thats your job, your job isnt to save people. I love the immediacy of the feedback, and all of a sudden we stole that stuff. And what he was telling us is who we are trying to recruit, and who we are trying to train right now. I want them to basically treat people with extraordinary compassion and kindness. Take care. All the different elements that are critical for our success in a practice and a game were recorded by the managers and then posted on the bulletin board. They have no standards because everything they do is remarkable. And of course my whole evolution has been trial and error. But whats shocking to us is how often extraordinary talent never gets on the field. And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising. Of course were all excited by huge talent and so the temptation is always to recruit talent. I am the person that can help them do better with the data. And we develop such an incredible mentality. We had sort of a vague idea that in order to be effective you had to be great 1 v. 1, so we have 5 different 1-on-1 ladders. And so if I tell them theyre, you know, utterly uncoachable what Im saying is every time I tell you this, you know, you, your reaction to it tells me you just dont think that thats what they should be doing, and your fight with me in this area is going to prevent you from reaching your potential. He would calmly nod and make it seem like he was agreeing with the person, and then in a very calm and mature voice just say well, your moral imperative is not this substandard employee, your moral imperative is that extraordinary, you know, widow thats trying to live on basically her investment in your company. So Anson, you are quite an accomplished man and Im sure have lots of great insights to share with us. Melissa: I love that. And of course hes nodding and hes not contradicting anyone. Its basically about accountability. And again, as I mentioned earlier, I read reams of business books. And thats one of the greatest compliments Ive ever received, even though its sort of framed as a backhanded compliment. Our primary mission is to develop the character of the young women that were training. And so we just dont tolerate any kind of whining in any part of any practice, and hopefully theres no whining behind our backs either. How do you find these new ideas? Theyll know if their preparation isnt good enough coming into the session. And I think, ladies and gentlemen, hold onto your hats, cause Im about to blow you away with this one mans accomplishments. Ive learned the lesson that some people just dont want to be in my culture. And the only one theyre not allowed to touch is coachability. And I know that thats something in the corporate world thats been a really hot topic lately, are performance reviews and giving people real time performance feedback. If you guys learn one thing from me today, make sure your HR person has incredible insights into hiring the right people because your HR person is going to determine whether or not your company is going to be successful or not. Now, the way we raise our kids, as we spend every single day ass-kissing all of them, they have no sense of authority because they know their parents are full of crap. So even though theyve done nothing but lie to their parents about their performance, now theyre fed all this garbage thats based on the lies youve told your parents thats created a narrative that youve been cheated. One of the greatest compliments Ive ever been given by any player Ive ever coached was a kid of mine that was playing in the pro leagues. And basically what he is trying to tell me. You care about them. And let me tell you something. I think this is often where employees will interpret feedback in a negative way. But talent is just so overwhelmingly tempting. And he is so right. Ill give you my favorite example. And as a woman you can understand the huge perils of deconstructing a womans confidence. When I was this young coach came up to me one day and said, Anson, if youre bored one afternoon, please let us know. And so what you asked earlier about this cauldron thing, we have three basic tools that we use that I think separate us. You actually are. So if we have 30 players in the roster, in the 28 different categories everyones ranked from 1 to 30. No standards, no respect for authority.
